[Texto da FCSH-UNL] Manuel Alcántara Saez, from the University Complutense of Madrid, will give the III Pedro Hispano Lecture, on Política, Partidos y Elecciones en América Latina. Date: 14 March, 16.00-17.30. Location: FCSH/NOVA’s Auditorium 2, Tour B, 3rd floor.

Manuel Alcántara Sáez (Ph.D., Universidad Complutense de Madrid) is Full Professor of Political Science at the University of Salamanca, where he has served as director of the Latin American Institute (1994-2007) and as vice chancellor of international relations (2007-2009). He has been Secretary General of the Latin American Political Science Association (2002-2008).

He has been visiting researcher at North Carolina and Notre Dame Universities and has taught in various universities in Latin America, in the US (Georgetown and Tulane), in France (Instituts de Sciences Politiques in Lille and Paris, and Institut des Hautes Études de l’Amérique Latine at Sorbonne III), and in Portugal (FCSH/NOVA). He received an honorary doctorate from the Universidad Nacional de San Martin in Buenos Aires (2008) and the Bernardo O’Higgins Order of Merit, Chile’s highest honour for foreign citizens (2010). Manuel Alcántara has published extensively on political elites, political parties, legislative power, governability, and electoral issues. His latest book is El oficio de político (Tecnos, 2012).
